The way and means of electronic data transfer have changed drastically over the last decades, in companies as well as in the private environment. It began with emails being the center of attention. Later, with growing file sizes the FTP was the newest technology, especially popular in enterprises. However, all these transfer methods lacked data security and operating comfort. Recently, there has been a shift more and more towards transferring data and folders using a file service that can be accessed via browser, network drive and apps. Legislation on data protection and technical developments has set corresponding requirements.
During the last few years, there has been a growing number of data leaks. This has led companies to start acting on data security and to overthink their IT-infrastructure. Already today, many companies are using security solutions for data transfer. This topic mostly concerns IT-decision makers in companies with more than ten employees. From a user’s perspective data transfer solutions need to be easy to operate and easy to integrate in existing work processes. IT administrators on the other hand, demand maximum security. Therefore, end-to-end encrypted data transfer with encrypted data storage is one of the highest priorities for IT-officials.
Legal aspects are just as important for data transfer: Varied responsibilities, liability issues and revision safety are key aspects for choosing a file service. This way, the damage can be limited considerably in case of a hacker attack or loss of company relevant data. The solution provider himself also plays an important role. The well-known practices of foreign intelligence agencies, which are able to intercept and analyze large amounts of data, have created uncertainty in recent years. Therefore, domestic companies, which professionally fend off and prevent unauthorized file access, are often preferred. It is not surprising that most companies prefer providers whose legal offices and computer centers are located in Germany or the EU.
A modern, cloud-based data transfer solution based on file sharing is a centrally managed data hub. It enables the reliable and secure exchange of files with company employees as well as with business partners, customers and suppliers. The manual transfer of data to the PC and other devices can be done e.g. via apps or an HTTPS encrypted web frontend, allowing for OS-independent operation without client-side installations.
To share files online certain security features are needed. This includes a regulated authorization and role structure as well as clear user identification. This ensures that the users only see what they are allowed to see.
With modern data transfers based on encrypted file sharing, the problems of outdated and insecure file transfer methods can be quickly and easily eliminated. Thus, a lot of administrative efforts on the receiver and transmitter side are a thing of the past. This also goes for technical limitations concerning the transfer of large data quantities. Last but not least, modern Enterprise Filesharing and Sync (EFSS) optimizes business processes and increases team productivity.
